Team USA defeated Team Venezuela in the 2009 World Baseball Classic to progress to the second stage of the competition. There was no joy for the venezuelan supporters as they had high hopes that their team - which features Major Baseball stars as Magglio Ordonez, Bobby Abreu, Carlos Guillen, Melvin Mora, Miguel Cabrera and Jose Lopez - would take all comers and progress to the finals of this tournament. However, the bullpen did not do its job and the hopes have been halved as Team Venezuela must win their next game to have any hopes of reaching the next stage of the competition. Final score: USA  15   Venezuela  6.
