Pitcher Cole Hamels won the"mano a mano" duel with Scott Kazmir as he delivered a stunning display on the mound at Tropicana Field last night to silence the crowd as he aided the Phillies to take the glory in the first game of the 2008 World Series. It was a wobbly beginning by Rays' opening hurler, Scott Kazmir, which prompted a strange sinking feeling of emotional effect as it captured the tension on Rays' World Series debut, since he allowed the Phillies to score twice in the first inning when Chase Utley's gargantuan clout to the bleachers produced a two-run homer which signalled the visitors' intention of battling for every out and run in this match.  Phillies scored again in the top of the fourth to increase their advantage but the host managed to put one back at the bottom of that inning. The Rays were on the rise as they scored again in the bottom of the fifth to trail by just one run; however, the Phillies stamped out further insurgency against their established advantage and went on to defeat the Rays by the smallest margin in the opening day of this series.
