Santana was the toast of New York on Friday night as he timed it perfectly to break Marlins resolve and throw a lifeline to the beleaguered Mets after a difficult week!
29 September 2008
New York Mets   2   Florida  Marlins  0

Johan santana's victory against the Marlins at Shea Stadium on Friday night might have just been a number for Major League Baseball's statistics but to the die-hard Mets' fans it meant the world as it threw a lifeline to their team to enable them to fight another day. Indeed, the Mets are still hanging there with a chance to progress to the next stage of the season, namely the playoffs, but sheer boldness was the order of the day on Friday night as caution and prudence was thrown out of the window when Jerry Manuel made the decision to show his ace after only three days' rest. Santana's response to the call was an excellent one as he delivered his best performance yet in a Mets' uniform before the biggest crowd of the season at Shea Stadium and one which ranks among his very best in Major League Baseball. Certainly, the win struck a responsive chord in the punters' hearts as it lightened the mood of the old stadium with a brilliant feel good score being returned to the city that never sleeps and its people which saw Santana's performance being delivered above a wave of emotions as it carried the ace to administer the ultimate pain relief to the Mets' exasperation in a game where failure was not an option.  Tears of mortification were seen pouring forth at Shea Stadium as Santana's mano a mano with Ricky Nolasco turned out to be a duel of anxiety since both men were well in control of their nerves as opposite to the Mets' fans whose hearts were jumping out of their mouths with every pitch thrown. However, Santana opted to fight the duel on his terms as the price of failure would have been too high to bear for the Mets and their fans.  There was drama still to come in the ninth innings as no one knew whether Santana was going to be allowed to go on for one more inning and when he did the crowd applauded the decision wholeheartedly as their idol proved his worth once more when he went on to provide the perfect finish for the Mets as they remained on target for a place in the Playoffs.  Final score:  Mets  2   Marlins  0.
