Carlos Beltran was the man of the match for the Mets as he produced a walk-off single to sink the Cubs at Shea Stadium last night. Indeed, Beltran proved to be a hero for the die-hard Mets' fans as his input brought more than just a win to the beleaguered Mets team. Relief is the word I was looking for since things have not been going very well for the New Yorkers recently. Nevertheless, the Mets must build momentum on this victory and take their chances when they are presented to them if they are to get closer to the big prize. Opening hurler, Pedro Martinez, eyed more than glory last night as he braced himself for what it could have been his last performance at Shea Stadium as the thought of packing up the game altogether has been lingering in his mind for quite sometime now. He completed six innings last night, conceding seven hits, including a first inning homer by Micah Hoffpauir, and struck out six batters. There was appreciation for his work on the mound by the fans at the time of his departure from the game as they showed their approval by clapping his going which measured their appreciation and as if they were in unanimity with his thoughts of bringing the curtains down to his wonderful career. In the end the Mets edged out the Cubs at Shea Stadium and the next step must be to push for a place in the Playoff.  Final score:  Mets  7  Cubs  6.
