There is a feast of good reasons to believe that the Mets' chances to reach the playoffs are very much resting now on a forlorn hope as they were defeated on home soil by the Chicago Cubs last night!
25 September 2008
Chicago Cubs   9   New York  Mets  6

Dark clouds were gathering over the New York City Skyline this morning as the Sun kept his hat on, it, too, was annoyed by the debacle of the Mets last night. Be this as it may be, it was a foggy morning which brought chaos to the busy streets in the city as if the irony of fate was cordially endorsing the luminescent star's negative temperament. Nevertheless, the long arm of coincidence made the supreme sacrifice of sparing the fans the thought of a link between last season failure and this season acid test on route to the playoffs at exactly the same stage. There was indignation and sadness in the crowd for the defeat at Shea Stadium as many vented their frustration to the Heavens, Jerry Manuel, the manager, and his players.  A strikingly attractive young lady who I was keenly eyeing at the start of the game was now bathed in tears for the loss the Mets suffered at the hands of the Cubs. With a little cry of pain, I ventured to express my sympathy and offered her to buy a cup that cheers but does not inebriate. She refused, of course. Indeed, there was a continuous fusillade of criticism directed to the skipper who in my opinion must carry the can for much of what has gone wrong with the Mets this season. Opening hurler, Oliver Perez did not have a very comfortable time on the mound as he was hit at will by the Cubs' heavy artillery in the top of the fifth, conceding four runs and allowing the Cubs to tie the game. The fragile Mets' bullpen was then called on to try to quell the uprising but it was not able to do so and the Cubs scored again in the top of the seven to go ahead. It was at the bottom of the eighth inning when the Mets scored the equalising run which eventually took the game into extra innings. The Cubs advanced threateningly in the tenth and they managed to score three times with the help of Mr. Ramirez who hit a homer off Ayala in that inning which literally killed any hope the Mets had to keep the spoils of the match at home. Certainly, it was a game that the Mets did not deserve to lose since they have been given a good enough advantage in the bottom of the third when Carlos Delgado hit a gargantuan homer to the furthest part of the centre field with four on board which gave Delgado his four Grand Slam in Major League Baseball.  Final score:  Cubs  9  Mets  6
