The silence of the Mets' fans at Shea Stadium in the fourth inning last night spoke volumes of discontent as young Jonathon Niese was smote by Jason Marquis as he went deep to the right field with three on board which in turn produced his very first career grand slam.  Indeed, that mighty blow affected severely the confidence of the team as the Mets came up short again when the Cubs took advantage of Niese's inexperience and struck him hard in the top of the fourth prompting Jerry Manuel to jump nervously to his feet and substituting the young lad who left the mound with his left hand covering his nose as if a hydrogen sulphide flatulence had produced a horrid smell which he could not stand. The bullpen was called on to make its point but it was unable to keep the Cubs' heavy artery at bay and in the end they sealed a win which they thoroughly deserved. For all that, the Mets find themselves in a corridor of uncertainties owing to missed opportunities and misjudged interventions by the skipper which have yielded in my opinion the consequences of those circumstances. Certainly, the catch-up little contest that started at the start of the season between the Mets and the Phillies appeared to have leaned in favour of the latter as they defeated the Braves last night which has increased the gap which the Phillies has been enjoying for the last three matches. Final score:  Cubs  9   Mets   5
