Mets triumph and Phillies failure means they are back at the top of the National League East! 20 September 2008 New York Mets 9 Atlanta Braves 5Fortune favours Mets' title bid as they defeated the Braves at the tribe's patch and the Phillies failed to win away from home last night at Dolphin Stadium. Indeed, one can be easy carried away with the headlines but the Mets have stayed calm amid the title talk as they are back in first place in the National League East. Certainly, the Mets have been playing catch-up with the Phillies since the start of the season and at one point it appeared that the Phillies with its mighty force were good enough to reach the Playoffs first as the season nears its end but somehow the pressure has begun to take toll on the level of their performances and they have for the time being succumbed to that pressure. Rumours that Jerry Manuel, Mets' manager, was beginning to feel the heat were laughed off by himself as he called on the players to give their best in order to ensure a Grand stand finale. Albeit, opening hurler, Oliver Perez, is proving to be a surge of a genius on the mound these days, he did not have the best of night on the mound, by his standard, last night as he pitched six innings conceding four runs, six hits and striking out six batters before he gave way to Nelson Figueroa who pitched to two batters in the seventh. The match itself was an even steven contest until the top of the eighth inning when the Braves began to feel the power of the Mets' artillery as Daniel Murphy produced a two-run double which literally ended the contest as the Mets' bullpen conceded no further runs. Final score: Mets 9 Braves 4P. Figueras
