Marlins made the series square on a walk-off in the ninth as they put paid to Mets' nonchalant approach to this game!
31 August 2008
Miami Marlins  4   New York Mets  3

The Mets have been busily steeling themselves for something big and dramatic lately that whenever an alternate period of good and bad luck comes about there seems to be a slight sense of anticlimax in their performace. Indeed, they need to deal with it with a much more calm manner and accept that in the context of life baseball is a very unpredictable game as it is full of surprises, and by the same token it often produces exciting events which are not less significant than those that life itself present us in a daily basis. Indeed, it has to be said that one's critical faculties, like one's temper and sense of perception, are useful to distinguish quality from rubbish, especially when raised expectations are not fulfilled; however, I find that far too often people are a little too eager to read beyond the nature of issues and ignore the benefit of the doubt.  I am talking about the Mets' bullpen since I can find in its deficiency a precious hidden magic in which others might think as unacceptable simple because they have been told a story that I don't fully believe. I am not trying to put anybody at easy but it makes me uneasy to see people pointing their fingers and waving about their arms wildly, as if flailing a whip in the direction of the bullpen. Certainly, in this occasion, the Mets lost a game they should have won as the opening pitcher, Mike Pelfrey, had an excellent night on the mound, conceding only two runs in seven innings, and indeed, David wright gave the Mets a pefect break as he wasted no time in starting them off in style as he hit a two-run home run. They scored again in the top of the third inning to lead three nothing but the Marlins managed to reduced Mets' advantage by one run when they scored twice in the bottom of the sixth and in the bottom of the eighth Mike Jacobs made Duaner Sanchez cursed in spanish as he connected with one of Sanchez 90 miles per hour pitch and sent it flying over the right field fence to tie the game. In comes my old chum Aaron "The Man" Heilman to try to put some order to the preceding in the bottom of the ninth but things did not go according to plan as he walked the leadoff batter, Hanley Ramirez, a sacrificed sign was put on the next batter which allowed Ramirez to reach second base. There was one out when Aaron delivered a wild pitch and Ramirez advanced to third base; this prompted the manager, Jerry Manuel, to signal an intentional walk which took Jorge Cantu to first base and with runners in first and third and one down, there was no option but to intentionally walk the next batter who happened to be the man who had hit the only homer of the game in the eighth inning as he had the strength to hit the ball to the outfield which who would have scored Ramirez on a sacrifice fly and all that jazz. The idea behind this plot was to pitch to Josh Willingham with the bases full and force him to produced a ground ball that would have created an opportunity for a double play and kill the inning; instead, Heilman threw only one strike to Willingham in five pitches which gave Willingham a free base and at the same time it resulted in the Mets gifting the game to the Marlins. Final score:  Marlins 4  Mets  3
