There were darkness and quietnes in the aftermath of the match at a well-lit Shea Stadium last night as the Mets suffered a rare defeat at home!
24 August 2008
Houston Astros  8   New York Mets  3

"All will be well in the end", someone uttered loudly in a short but significant manifest at the crowd from the broadcasting booth position in the centre of the apple at Shea Stadium last night, at the end of the match, as many knelt and prayed that the loss of this match would neither graze nor pierce the vein of good form which the team has enjoyed since the appointment of Jerry Manuel as a caretaker manager. Brilliant, and resolute are the adjectives I can find to qualify John Maine's performances on the mount for the Mets this season and last night loss was his first in five starts as he conceded eight runs and ten hits during his staying on the mound. Indeed, the statistics of this game speak truly that he was hit at will last night and by the end of the sixth the Astros had built enough runs to put the game to bed. However, it must be said that the Mets remained competitive throughout the match and it showed when Brian Schneider hit a two- run home run, his second in as many games, in the eighth inning off Brandon Backe; he hit it so well that it would be a shame not to praise his shot since it was an excellent one and yet the stroke proved to be a case of too little too late for the Mets to make any alteration to the scoreline. Final score:  Astros  8  Mets  3
