The ever-burning lights, the elements of a fine air and the passion for life of the people of New York were all represented at Shea Stadium last night as the Mets marked their return with a victory over the Atlanta Braves!
20 August 2008
New York Mets  7  Atlanta  Braves  3

Knocking heavens' doors below the ever-burning lights of the New York skyline in his first appearance for the Braves, since returning from Triple-A, was J.J. Reyes. It is purely the honesty in me to say what I have seen and known about Reyes, as I have observed him and his own courses in spring training, and have come to the conclusion that he is a good ball player. Moreover, it pleases me a great deal to say that the young man has talent in abundance. Nevertheless, the key to success is not often how much one promises but how much one delivers. It must be said that he did not have a good start last night as he conceded two early runs in the first inning but somehow he managed to come out of that inning with no further damage to his pride. Indeed, after that inning, Reyes remained on the mound like an unbeatable solid oak for six good innings and his team seemingly was enjoying their one-run lead which the Braves had obtained in the third inning when their offensive produced three runs. However, things did not quite go according to plan and as Bennett substituted the youngster on the mound all was well until the bottom of the eighth inning when the spice was right for the Mets as Carlos Delgado belted a double with the bases full which overturned the advantage that the Braves had. Ohman replaced Bennet and he was unable to contain the assault that the Mets' offensive was dishing out to his team as he allowed two more runs. Tavarez and Gonzalez came next and between the two they managed to put the fire out but the damage had already been done and the Mets had secured the first win of the series. Certainly, it was rather interesting to note that the Braves' weak spot turned out to be its bullpen and not the returning kid. Oliver Perez had a good night on the mound before he entrusted the responsibility to close the game to the Mets' bullpen and like dogs with bones in their jaws, Ayala, Heilman and Schoeneweis did just so, as they were in no mood to let this one go. An audible sight of relief was released by the die-hard Mets' fan when it was done. Final score: Braves  3  Mets  7
