Washington turned out to be a good hunting ground for the Mets last night as their performance helped them outclass the Nationals and oust the Phillies of the top of the Nationals League East!

New York Mets  12  Washington Nationals  0

A bucketful of trouble were the Mets for the Nationals in Washington last night as they pushed their hosts in the direction of a slaughterhouse. Indeed, a scent of victory was in the air when John Maine outwitted the Nationals' artillery in five innings on the mound, striking out six batters and conceding a sole hit but when the game needed to be closed, all eyes were on the Mets' bullpen as it has become untrustworthy in recent times; however, there was no way that it was going to neglect this opportunity to show what it was made of and it arrived in the shape of Brian Stokes, who pitched the rest of the game conceding no runs and striking out three batters.  Carlos Beltran and Daniel Murphy were the main contributors of the bulging score as the former hit a double to drive, nationals' opener, Jason Bergmann, from the mound in the third inning and the latter produced a two-run homer in the fifth to literally put the game to bed for the Mets. Final score: Mets  12  Nationals  0
