Game Set & Match

A delightful feast of tennis was served despite the cold weather at The Waterside Centre in SE19 on Saturday morning when Victoria Massambab and Allegra Lawla met in the final of the 2019 Autumn Junior tournament. It was Victoria who struck first, after a tightly-contested opening set, as she claimed a crucial break in the middle of the set with the score level at 4-4 which allow her to go ahead for the first time in the match and win the first set 6-4. The second set was a different story as Allegra unleashed her competitive nature on the tennis court which enabled her to clinch the second set 3-6. Bring on the third set was the toast of a vociferous crowd and with hard work and a well-defined approach, the third set did not disappoint anyone as the girls once more excelled with the rackets in their hands. It was Victoria who broke Allegra’s serve first in the last set with the score 4-4. Allegra fought back fiercely but Victoria did not relinquish her lead and won the match 6-4. Pity there had to be a casualty but unfortunately, in a competition, there have to be winners and losers. Such is life. Still, it needs to be said that Allegra’s dedication almost reached a peak on a fabulous day when she near won her first tennis tournament at SE19.
Rosalee a newcomer to the Figueras tennis Club gave a good account of herself as she won the under 8 categories when she defeated a handful of competitors, namely, Zora, Vivienne, Yeshua and Joel. “Nothing beats being here and compete; it was cool to be part of all this”, Rosalee said after being crowned champion.  The future is golden for this bunch of kids and tennis.
