Kilgour (Perth)

John Kilgour (d.1852) was a planter in Demerara who returned to Perth and dies there in December 1852, leving his esyaye to his illegitimate son John Kilgour junior, who was born in Demerara about 1835. [Will of John Kilgour SC49/31/56, Perth Sheriff Court]

Kilgour recieved compensation in 1834 of £106 8s for two enslaved people. [Legacies of British Slavery] At his death he had a number of claims against estates in Demerara, most of them insolvent 

John Kilgour junior became an apprentice in the merchant navy. After his father's death he enlisted in the Royal Navy but deserted in Bermuda. He then re-entered the merchant service by chaing his name to John Mackenzie. He was last heard of in New York in 1856. [Perthshire Advertiser, 21 July 1890; Dundee Courier, 21 July 1890]
