Highland Scots - Inverness & area:
John Ettles

John Ettles was born in 1781, the eldest son of Robert Ettles and Elspat Gordon, and nephew of John Ettles (d1808), who ran Ettles Hotel in Inverness. Robert Burns stayed at the hotel on his tour of Scotland and Inverness Town Council often met there.

By 1804 John Ettles, aged 23, was manager of an estate on Leguan Island, Demerara, and, according to young Edward Fraser of Reelig, earning ‘a good salary’. He made a will there in 1808, leaving his property to his four sisters in in Inverness. His executors in Demerara were John Haywood and Arthur Mackenzie. He died in Demerara on 28 July 1813.
