Donald Macdonald (Clanranald)

Donald Macdonald was the second surviving son of John Moidartach Macdonald, chief of Macdonald of Clanranald. His older brother Ranald George Macdonald [1788-1873] succeeded to the title in 1794.

Donald was educated at the University of Leyden, where he took his degree in 1817. He entered the Civil Service, and lived for some time in Demerara. he was a signatory to an anti-emancipation petition from the colonies in 1826. By 1834 he was Collector of Customs for Berbice [London Missionary Society, Report to Directors, 1834, lxi], where he died in 1837 [Aberdeen Journal quoted in Dobson, Scots in South America].
