Family of Rev Robert Arthur, minister of Resolis

Rev Robert Arthur (1744-1821) was minister of Resolis in the Black Isle from 1774 to 1821. He was married four times and had nine children. Two of his five sons went to Guyana.

Innes Arthur (1785-1816) went out to Guiana in the same ship as Gilbert Douglas and worked under Robert Douglas [NLS MS 19331 f67 Mrs Anne Robertson, Kiltearn, to her daughter Christian (Mrs Watson), Crantit, Orkney, 20 Apr 1802 - she described him as 'a tall genteel looking lad']. In 1810 he succesfully claimed 1800 guilders from the Court of Policy of Berbice, the value of his slave Smart who had died of fatique following a 'Bush expedition'. Innes Arthur drowned at sea in 1816 [Fasti ecclesiae Scoticanae].

Robert Arthur ‘late of Berbice’ (1799-1829) died at Cromarty ‘after a few hours illness’ [Scotsman, 18 Jul 1829].
