Hugh Gordon (Invercarron)

Hugh Gordon, eldest son of Captain Robert Gordon of Invercarron, in the parish of Kincardine (Ross-shire), died in Demerara in September 1827. His sister Barbara was married (1818) to Harry Rainy, brother of the Demerara merchants Gilbert and George Rainy.

Harry Rainy was both an eminent scientist, becoming professor of forensic medicine at Glasgow University, and a leading member of the Free Church of Scotland. Their son, Robert, a theologian, became principal of the Free Church’s New College, Edinburgh.
