Thomas & William McCulloch (Loth)

Thomas [b1774] and William McCulloch [b1780] were sons of Rev George McCulloch [1728‑1800], parish minster of Loth (Sutherland), and his wife Elizabeth Forbes [d1814]. Their mother’s three brothers went to the West Indies and her sister Anne was the wife of Rev Harry Robertson, of Kiltearn. The Robertson’s children had many connections with Demerara and Berbice and in 1809 their son, Hugh Munro Robertson, in the context of referring to family and friends, wrote from Berbice saying that Tom and William McCulloch were well. This is almost certainly a reference to their cousins from Loth. In 1811 Hugh noted that ‘poor William McCulloch was very ill for a few days last month but he has got quite well again’. [NLS MS 19332 f86, Hugh Munro Robertson to Dr Traill from Kiltearn, Berbice June 4th 1809; f92 Hugh Munro Robertson to Mrs Traill (his mother) from Demerara Mahaica Oct 8th 1811.]

It is likely that this is the William McCulloch who died on 15 January 1819 at Plantation Brothers, Demerara, a property associated with the Robertsons.
