Sunday 1st September
In the morning I went to Saint Catherine’s by myself. Isabella & Surtees went to St Lawrence’s. In the afternoon Isabella, Surtees & self went to St Catherine’s, Papa to St Lawrence’s. In the evening went on the Esplanade.
Monday 2nd September
Stayed at home all morning. At 2 o/c. we started for black gang chine in a pony chaise. We walked to the bottom of the chine, very steep & hot. we went into the bizarre, Papa bought two sand views. We then walked to the Nob (St Catherine’s Down) & walked back to the hotel. Got back to Ventnor about 6 o/c. in the evening we went on the Esplanade, the band played.
Tuesday 3rd September
We went with Mr and Mrs Sutton to a meeting in the morning.

In the afternoon we went for a walk towards Bonchurch. In the evening we went to hear the little Sutton’s play a trio, I also played.
Wednesday 4th September
Packed up my things, wrote to Harriette Bird. In the evening went on the Esplanade.
Thursday 5th September
Started at 9 o/c for Ryde. Stopped at Brading & saw “Little Jane’s” grave[1] & the church.
Left Ryde by the 12.15 boat & Portsmouth by the 1.35 train. Arrived at Brighton at 3.20 & drove to Cavendish Place. The darling chicks were in the drawing room. I had tea with them then we went on the Esplanade & met Georgia. We walked with the children as far as the Chain Pier. Georgie & I then returned home, had tea, then spent the evening at the Drury’s.
Friday 6th September
George Drury came in. I went with the children on the beach. We stayed there till dinner time. Auntie, uncle & Isabella came at ½ past 1 o/c. We left Brighton at 4.50 drove from Lewes to Offham in the wagonette. It was so jolly to be with them all again & I feel so happy. Stanley is staying here.
Saturday 7th September
In the morning I played at croquet with Stanley & Maggie. Went round the garden with auntie & picked some flowers for Polly. I wrote to Papa. Had an archery

party. Then a game at croquet. After tea we had a game at bagatelle & some music. They all left at ½ past 10 o/c.
Sunday 8th September
Wrote to Isabella. Went to church morning & afternoon. Mr Shiffrun[?] did all the service. After afternoon service I took a walk through the shrubbery with Auntie, Nelly, Jessie & Emma.
Monday 9th September
After breakfast had a game at croquet with Polly, Maggie & Stanley. Walked down to the station to see Stanley off by the 11.30 train. Auntie Milly & her baby went to Brighton. In the afternoon, Polly, Maggie & Uncle went out riding. I stayed at home. In the evening we played at bagatelle.
Tuesday 10th September
Had breakfast in bed as my cold was very heavy. Uncle went up to London. In the afternoon played at croquet, shot with Maggie & played a game at croquet. In the evening bagatelle & music.
Wednesday 11th September
Charlie’s birthday. I shot with Nelly, had a game at croquet. Went in the carriage to Studwick[?] Park.
Thursday 12th September
Wrote toIsabella & Jane ???. Willie went to school at Blackheath. Went to the Baroes[?] at home at Chailey. Lunched at the Miss Blencowe’s (Maggie, Polly & I). Auntie & uncle returned from London.
Friday 13th September
Wet morning. In the afternoon Polly & I took a short walk on the Coast

road to Lewes. Uncle & Isabella came from Brighton. Clayton arrived. Uncle, Polly, Isabella, Maggie & Clayton went to the County Ball.
Saturday 14th September
Auntie gave me £5[4]; Richard, Georgie, Lindley, & Alice, a photograph book, Lammy[?], Polly & Isabella a brooch. Maggie her carte de visite. Heard from Papa, Isabella, Surtees, Harriet & Jane. Richard came over from Brighton. We played croquet shot. Took a walk on the???? Road in the afternoon. Played at bagatelle in the evening. A very happy day. Richard left.
Sunday 15th September
Went to church morning & afternoon. Had a jolly walk on the Downs, with Polly, Isabella, Margaret & Clayton, delightful!!
Monday 16th September
Auntie, Polly & Clayton went over to Brighton. In the afternoon Isabella, Maggie & self took a walk on the Lewes Road. Bagatelle in the evening.
Tuesday 17th September
Walked farm with Polly, Isabella, Maggie & Clayton had a game of croquet & then walked to the station with Clayton. We are all so very sorry he has gone. Polly & I ??? went to see Mrs Cafflin. Evening bagatelle.
Wednesday 18th September
Heard from Charlie. We went to the Brighton flower show, auntie, Isabella, Margaret & Eiffel is to we met Mr and Mrs Robertson.in the morning we went to the Lewes station to see Richard, Georgie & the chicks on their way to Tunbridge Wells.
Thursday 19th September

Wrote to Lindsey. Shot. Croquet. Emily Curzon’s & Mr Gore’s wedding day[5].
Friday 20th September
Went in the carriage to the Sheet & Plumpton flower show.
Saturday 21st September
Wrote to Georgie, is day 16 years (1845) my own dear mother died. Auntie, uncle, Polly, Isabella & Margaret went to the ???. Read “Recreations of a country Parson”.[6]
[1] Here Jane the young cottager lived when Rev. Legh Richmond was Vicar of Brading in the early part of last century. Her tombstone is at the back of Brading Church.
