June 1861

[Needs prettifying]

Saturday 1st June

After breakfast I put up the doll for little Georgie. At 11 o/c I started to go home. In the afternoon I went for a little walk by myself. In the

evening wrote to Georgie & little Georgie & worked – the puppy came.

Sunday 2nd June

In the morning went to Christ Church – Mr Brown preached. In the afternoon walked up to Norfolk Square with Papa. In the evening, went to St Phillips by myself, Mr Brown preached.

Monday 3d June

Mr Haffenden came. I took a walk in the gardens in the afternoon.

Tuesday 4th June

In the morning we went into the town & in the afternoon Jane came to ask us to go to the band with her, we went & were caught in a heavy shower of rain. Got home about ½ past 6.  Charlie & Mary came to see us in the evening.

Wednesday 5th June

Opening of the horticultural gardens South Kensington. In the afternoon went with Jane to see the people coming from the Fete.

Thursday 6th June

Mary came to spend the day with us. In the afternoon we took a walk together and at 6 o/c Mary Smith came, Charlie came soon after. They all left at 11 o/c.

Friday 7th June

Stayed at home all the morning in the afternoon we took a walk with Jane in the gardens. Surtees went to hear Mr Billerd[?] read.

Saturday 8th June

Received a letter from Nelly inviting me to stay at Woking.  In the afternoon we took a walk in the gardens.

Sunday 9th June

File 051:

In the morning I went to Christchurch. Mr Kempe[?] from St James’s Park daily preached. Wet afternoon so we stayed at home. In the evening I went to St Philips.  Mr Evans preached.

Monday 10th June

Went to see Harriet Bird but she was not at home. I saw Mrs Bird & left a little cross for Harriet, then went to Gloucester Gardens had lunch there & in the afternoon Polly Isabella Maggie & I went in the carriage. We stayed out till nearly 6 o/c.  I then went with Maggie to see the Longmans; we stayed in the drawing room with Tina till nearly 7.  Then went back to Gloucester Square.  Maggie dressed to go to dine at ???.   Auntie & Fanny went to redding for the afternoon. I got home again at 8 o/c.  I said goodbye to them all in Gloucester Square, hoping that we may meet again before long.

Tuesday 11th June

In the morning I walked up to Jenny’s to have my dress altered, also went to Knightsbridge to get some stays. In the afternoon we went to see Jane & sat with her sometime. Margaret Bird sent me her photographs.

Wednesday 12th June

In the morning I walked with Jane to Knightsbridge & to Duke Street. In the afternoon I went to the Arnolds to stay. I had tea with Charlie at his lodgings. After tea

Mary & Mary Smith came & we went into the gardens. We came home about 9 o/c. & had supper. Charlie left at 10 o/c.

Thursday 13th June

At 10 o/c we started for St Paul’s Cathedral, we arrived there at 11 o/c. The Bishop of Bath and Wells preached. The service began at 12. We left at 2 o/c. & went to lunch at Mr Arnold’s office then we went back to St Paul’s & we went into the crypt & saw the Duke of Wellington’s tomb. We got home again at½ past 5 o/c. Charlie & I went to Sunderland Terrace & saw aunt Margaret & aunt Emma. We had tea at 6 o/c. & sat together in the drawing room till supper time.

Friday 14th June

Born[?] Mary ???’s birthday.

Mary, Mary Smith & Charlie walked across the gardens with only about 8 o/c. they left me at the Round Pond.   P afterapa had gone to his office I packed up and at 12 went into the town. After lunch I went to get some balls for the children & 3 o/c started for the Station. I arrived at Woking at 4.20. John met me at the Station & we drove home in the dogcart. We had dinner at ¼ to 7 & afterwards nearly & I went & sat in the garden. The country is looking so lovely.

Saturday 15th June

In the morning we set out & worked & red. I wrote to Maggie, Mary & Isabella. In the afternoon we went for a drive also to the Hermitage[?].

In the evening we went in the garden.

Sunday 16th June

In the morning Nelly, John & I went to the Prison Chapel. The service was over about a ¼ to 12 o/c. So we went & sat on the hill, I took a walk in the lanes by myself, came home to lunch at 1 o/c when John & I took a lovely walk through the meadows and home by the Canal.  Dinner at a ¼ to 7 o/c.   we did not go out in the evening.

Monday 17th June

After breakfast wrote to my journal. At 2 o/c went with John in the dogcart to Guildford, we got home again before 6 o/c.

Tuesday 18th June

Went with John to the Station in the dogcart. Arthur also went with us. John went up to London. We afterwards sat in the garden. In the afternoon Nelly and I went for a short drive.

Wednesday 19th June

John came back from London. We stayed in all the afternoon it was so hot. In the evening John and I dined at the Hermitage. After dinner Mrs Lyons took me around the shrubbery & in the hayfield. After tea they had music, a very pleasant evening. We left at ½ past 10 o/c.

Thursday 20th June

Heard from Isabella & Mary. Wrote to Polly. In the afternoon I went with the children to the Hermitage. We stayed in the

hayfield till ½  past 6 o/c. 

Tuesday 21st June

Polly’s birthday. In the morning we went in the garden & in the afternoon we drove to Chobham, home to dinner at a ¼ to 7 o/c.

Saturday 22nd June

In the afternoon I went to the Lions and we had tea in the hayfield, we went a party of 19 in the wagon through the woods. In the evening Mr and Mrs lion came to dinner & Mrs Norton came after dinner. I played & Mrs Norton sang. They left at ½  past 10 o/c. 

Sunday 23rd June

At ½ past 10 I went to the Hermitage & went to church with the Lyons. Mr Bowles preached.  In the afternoon John and I went to chapel & at 5 o/c we took a walk together. Home at ¼ to 7 to dinner & in the evening we sat out.

Monday 24th June

In the afternoon I went to the Hermitage & stayed till past 5 o/c. in the evening we went to church, Mrs Blaker walked home with us.

Tuesday 25th June

In the morning I went out with the checks. In the afternoon John went to Chertsey. Nelly and I took a short walk after tea.

Wednesday 26th June

Auntie’s birthday. We went to Guildford in the carriage & were there all the afternoon.

Thursday 27th June

In the morning

File 055:

We went in the garden & in the afternoon John took Arthur & me for a drive in the dogcart. In the evening we sat out.

Friday 28th June

At ½ past 1 o/c John & I started for Guildford in the dogcart, we were there all the afternoon & did not get home till nearly ½ past 8.  In the evening we went in the garden.

Saturday 29th June

After breakfast I went out & got some routes & honeysuckle. Came in & packed up my trunk then Nelly went into the garden & pick me some flowers. I left for the Station in the dogcart with John at ½ past 5.  The train started at 5.3 & Iarrived in London at 6 o/c; got home a little before 7 o/c.  in the evening unpacked my trunk. Heard from Auntie.

Sunday 30th June

In the morning went to Christ Church. After lunch we went to Norfolk Square. In the evening I went to St Phillips.
