July 1861

[Needs prettifying]

Monday 1st July

Isabella & I walked up with Papa  had our likeness taken P. Afterwardsapa left us & we went to Harvey’s & two Miss Marshall’s. Mary & Willie had arrived when we got home. After dinner we sat in the drawing room till ½ past4 o/c when we went out in the town. Charlie came in the evening.

Tuesday 2nd July

I wrote to Polly & Maggie. Isabella left for Bognor. I went to see Jane & spent the afternoon with her & evening, Miss Bartram was also there.

Wednesday 3rd July

In the morning I went out by myself & in the afternoon Jane came to see me to tell me that she was going to Bognor the next day. We went out together , home again at 6.

Thursday 4th July

I spent the day at aunt Georgiana’s. Mary also came to lunch & at 5 we left for the villas, it was so wet I could not go home. Charlie also came to tea.

Friday 5th July

Willie walked home with me at 9 o/c.  I found 6 pairs of gloves arrived for me from Oporto. I wrote to Ellen & Tina. In the afternoon I called on Mrs Turner & Mrs Bartram.

Saturday 6th July

Papa left for Bognor at 10 minutes past 7 o/c.  at ½ past 3 Mary & I went to cancel green. We had tea at the villas & at 7 we left for home. Mary came to stay with us. Charlie & Willie left at 10 o/c.

Sunday 7th July

In the morning we went to Christchurch Mr Wright preached. In the afternoon we went for a walk

In the gardens & in the evening we went to Christ Church. Mr Wright preached. Charlie & Willie left at 10 o/c.

Monday 8th July

We worked at our addresses all day & in the evening Charlie & I took a short walk. Charlie came to tea.

Tuesday 9th July

We worked at our dresses until 3 o/c, then went to get ready, the Miss Brown’s called. Mary & I left in a camp a little before 5 o/c. Charlie & Young Bashford came in the evening.

Wednesday 10th July

I came home in the morning & in the afternoon Mary & the two Miss Arnolds called for me in the carriage to go to the ???? Fete with them. We met Charlie soon after we arrived. The races were beautiful. At ½ past 6  3 silver bugles were given away to the Middlesex Engineer Corps.  We stayed in the gardens until ½ past 7, then drove here to change my dress & I went back to the villas with the Arnolds. We were all very tired.

Thursday 11th July

Miss Jenkins called at the Arnolds. Mary & I played a lot of duets. Afterwards we went to see my aunts & then did some shopping. Came back to dinner at ½ past 10 o/c.  At 3, Mary, Miss Arnold & Willie started for ??? & I walked home.

I met Mrs Kingdon in the town, she was just going to Bognor. In the evening I went to see Jane. Papa came home from Bognor.

Friday 12th July

I went with Papa to Millbank & spent the day there. Bramley was staying there. In the afternoon they walked with me as far as Harvey’s when I bought several things for the Nobles then came home.

Saturday 13th July

Stayed at home in the morning & in the afternoon took a walk with Papa in Kensington Gardens.

Sunday 14th July

Went to Christ Church in the morning & received the sacrament. Archdeacon Sinclair preached. We went to Sunderland Terrace after lunch found my Aunts at home. In the evening Papa & I went to St Philips.

Monday 15th July

Since women’s day. Rained in the morning. Heard from Alice & Margaret. Made my muslin petticoat and at ¼ to 1 walked up to Westbourne Park fellows to lunch then to Miss Jenkins. We went to church at ½ past 4 o/c & in the evening Mr Evans came, Mary & Charlie came in for a few minutes.

Tuesday 16th July

After breakfast went to church. Then to see my aunts. Had dinner at 2 o/c.  At ½ 5 o/c I went to the Arnolds & had tea. Mary & Charlie walked part of the way home with

Wednesday17th July

After breakfast went to see Mrs Bartram. Wrote to Isabella & Polly. Walked over to Sunderland Terrace with Surtees. They had a few friends in the evening. Surtees & I dined at Miss Jenkins. I slept there.

Thursday 18th July

Directly after breakfast started with Mary for Brompton; we went to see Miss Molineux married. Then we went to Scarsdale pillars & back to Park Terrace to lunch. We went to the opera in the evening & heard Patti in Martha, Maris (Lionel) Grayisinis (Plunket) & Madme Dabriee ( Nancy) it was avery pretty opera & patio saying the last rose of summer to perfection.

Friday 19th July

Directly after breakfast I went to the Arnolds then to Millbank. In the afternoon we went with the children in the garden. Richard & Georgie dined out, little Georgie slept with me, dear little pet.

Saturday 20th July

Stayed in all the morning & in the afternoon Richard walked across the park with me.  I went to the A.Daniells. dinner at 7 o/c. in the evening Gertrude & I sat in the balcony.

Sunday 21st July

Auntie’s & Uncle’s wedding day.  Also dear Emma’s & Williams. In the morning Gertrude, Stanley & I

Went to Trinity Church & in the afternoon Gertrude & I went to hear Dr. Goulburn preach, he gave us a most beautiful sermon, we afterwards went to meet Uncle Anthony & we sat down the gardens until nearly 6 o/c.  then went home.

Monday 22nd July

Stayed in all of the morning & in the afternoon I went to see Mary then went back to Westbourne Square & Aunt Gertrude went out together as far as the Edgware road. In the evening Mary & Charlie called.

Tuesday 23rd July

At ¼ to 11 I went to Westbourne Park Villas & Mary, Miss Arnold, & I went in a cab to ???.  & Son to see the prizes given.  Surtees got a beautiful prize for mathematics. We went to Herbert’s to have some ices & then back to the villas. I walked on to Westbourne Square. In the evening Edward & Agnes etc. came to dinner.

Wednesday 24th July

Stayed in all the morning. In the afternoon went with Gertrude to see Mary & to the Grove. Gertrude gave me a very pretty pair of studs[?].  I left the Anthony Daniels at 4 o/c.  I was so very happy there & so very sorry to leave. Went to Norfolk Square to dinner. Papa & Surtees, aunt Emma & aunt Margaret also there. We left at 10 o/c.

Thursday 25th July in the morning went with Surtees to Knightsbridge. After lunch little Morrison came to say goodbye to us,

to cousin Richard, Tina & Ellen. In the evening went in the town to get some things for the Nobles.

Friday 26th July

Went into the town & finished. Got the things for Porto. Wrote to Margaret.

Saturday 27th July

Since the Boxster or Porto then wrote to Tina & cousin Richard. In the afternoon went to say goodbye to the Bartram’s.

Sunday 28th July

 In the morning went to Christchurch with Papa; Mr Wright preached. After lunch we walked up to Sunderland Terrace. Charlie was there & I went with him to see Miss Jenkins & Miss Arnold. Saw Mrs Arnold. Went back to Sunderland Terrace & walked home altogether. In the evening Charlie and I went to St Phillips. Charlie left at 10 o/c.

Monday 29th July

Went into the town & then packed. Went to say goodbye to Jane after dinner.

Tuesday 30th July

Left home at7 o/c. (Victoria Station 7.40. Isabella joined us at Woodgate. Arrived at Portsmouth at 10 minutes to 1 o/c.  left for Ryde at 10 minutes past 1 o/c, arrived at Ryde at a ¼ to 2 o/c.  went to the confectioners and had some buns etc. Left in the carriage Ventnor at ¼ past 2.  It took us two hours to get across. We took some very nice lodgings in Esplanade house. Had dinner in the evening, unpacked my things.

Wednesday 31st July

After breakfast we took a walk.  Surtees & I went up St Boniface down & then to the old church at Beaune church, we saw Mr Adams grave it is so lovely. Came home by the sea. Had dinner at 2 o/c. sat on the beach. Wrote to Isabella, Mary & Jane. Tea at ½ past 5 o/c. in the evening went on the Parade.
