Sue Varley

A native of Yorkshire, Sue now lives on the Black Isle with her husband, too many spinning wheels and not enough cats. A career as an IT professional offered little opportunity for writing anything other than computer software but having recently added creative writing to her crafting interests in spinning, weaving and knitting, Sue is now rediscovering the joy of text.

A Thumbnail of Experience

Small boats against the current are we, towing the  heavy laden, deep riding ship, beating upstream back to the source, going home. The ship’s cargo is a lifetime of experience, weighing us down but proving the worth of our journeys.

We set off with new timbers to our craft and strong cordage to the white, white sails shining in the sun. We raced with the current downstream to the sea and out into the vast oceans of opportunity. Putting in to many ports on our voyage, we picked up souvenirs from most of them, gradually replacing the pigs of ballast with our collected treasures.

We survived many storms, losing a spar here, a torn sail there, even a lightning struck mast went by the board one time. The worst was when we hit the iceberg, lost the rudder and drifted aimless for an unknown, unmeasured length of time. But always we patched, knotted and spliced, repaired and sailed on.

And now the old vessel is going back to its home port, to tie up alongside the wharf and rest.
