"It is only with sufficient visible numbers that scientists and academics sitting on the fence will feel that they can ‘come out’ to support in public what many already believe in private but are afraid to express openly for fear of loss of reputation or funding. Militant sceptical movements such as the Wikipedia Guerrilla Skeptics use intimidating tactics to reinforce this sense of threat that serves to maintain the status quo at a time when we need to be expanding rather than restricting the scientific endeavour, especially with respect to consciousness research."
