Wilma MacKenzie
Glass Engraver
Born and raised in Argyll, Wilma joined Edinburgh Crystal in 1977 as an apprentice copper wheel engraver. Her apprenticeship was for four years under the keen eye of Fred Lonie MBE. Leaving in 1986 to become self-employed, she met Marjorie Campbell, graphic designer, and formed the very successful partnership Luckenbooth Glass Engraving which lasted until Marjorie’s death in 1999.
Wilma now works from her gallery and workshop in the picturesque fishing village of Tarbert. Having the workshop in the gallery allows visitors to watch her at work. The process of engraving involves using copper wheels with a mix of carborundum and oil to grind into the glass. Every stage of the process is done by hand and is very labour intensive.
Mostly working to commission, Wilma has work in both private and public collections. Clients include The Royal Edinburgh Botanic Gardens, Bank of Scotland, Museums of Scotland, National Library of Scotland and many more.
