Slater's Directory (1911)
ROSEMARKIE 1911
ROSEMARKIE, is a parish and village in Black Isle poor combination and in the small debt court district of Dingwall, is 1 mile from Fortrose terminal station on a branch from Muir of Ord on the Highland railway and about 18 east from Dingwall. Rosemarkie and Fort George in Inverness-shire are connected by a ferry. The parish extends 9 miles along the coast of Moray Firth, and is 3 in breadth. The hills both on the north and south are for the most part arable, being in summer covered with verdure, and producing early and abundant crops. The coast all along between Rosemarkie and Cromarty is romantic, being bold and rocky, and as the country lies dry and has the benefit of fine sea breezes, the air is pure and salubrious. The parish church was completed in 1821, and is in the Late Gothic style. James Douglas Fletcher esq. D.L., J.P. of Rosehaugh and Ethie Avoch; Adam Roberts esq. of Raddery House, and the trustees of the late Mrs. Crosbie, of Flowerburn, are the principal landowners. The area of the parish is 6,675 acres; rateable value, landward, £4,039; burghal (Fortrose), £5,129; the population in 1901 was 1,465; of this number, 286 were returned as belonging to the village of Rosemarkie, the remainder being in the Fortrose burgh; the population in the ecclesiastical parish in 1901 was 801, including 23 in Black Isle-Combination Poorhouse.
