Bernard Gale. Thank you for accepting me into the group. My late father Bernard "Stormy" Gale and his brother Phil served with the Cameronians, and I'm very interested to know if anybody remembers them. (Although my dad would be 98 years old now...). He joined 1st Battalion in 1937 and left in 1962. He was a Bandsman, Band Sergeant and left as WO Class 2. He served in India, Burma, Gibraltar, Malaya, Bahrein, Kenya, Buxtehude etc. I have many photos that I can share if people are interested... Here he is in 1938, 1944 and then a group photo in Trieste 1949 just as a small sample! |

RSM W J Hoaksey. Many thanks to Linda Flannigan of Yorkshire who sent of this picture of her grandad. His name was William James Hoaksey. He married my Grandma who was from Hamilton and they went on to have 6 children. 3 of them were born in India. He was the eldest of 17 children so probably joined the regiment to get away from all the life at home. He was very proud of his career. He had four granddaughters and I finally had a brother. He was delighted as he lost 2 sons born in India. Earliest memories are of him having us marching around their large garden when we came for Sunday dinner and boy could he shout. Lol |

Rifleman George Woods. To Whom it may concern
The attached photographs are images of my Uncle Rifleman George Woods (AKA Bunty) service number 3247492; 2nd Battalion Cameronians ' Scottish Rifles'.
George served in the regiment from 1935 to 1948. He was part of the BEF in 1940 and following capture he saw out the rest of the War as a POW (12253) at Stalag XXB Marianburg.
His War Plaque has recently been replaced in Adelaide, South Australia by his daughter Pam. George was Australian he arrived in the UK as a 20-year-old stowaway and I suspect was given a choice 'Army or Prison'.
His Australian relatives ask that the above photographs be held in the regiments archives and promulgated as you see fit.
Kind Regards
David R Foster

Thanks Andrew Bannernan-Bayles Some photos of my Great Uncle, Bertie Parkin, 3252568, Rifleman with 1st Battalion Cameronians taken late 1941/early 1942 when the regiment was stationed at Meadows Barracks, Trimulgherry, India prior to being shipped to Burma. Bertie was badly wounded in April 1942 during the British retreat from Singapore. He died 3 or 4 days later in a Japanese POW camp (possibly Rangoon prison). His name is remembered on the memorial in his home village of Butterknowle, County Durham and on the huge Rangoon Memorial in Burma (now Myanmar) which lists over 27000 men who gave their lives in Burma and Assam in the service of the British Crown but whose remains were never recovered. |
