Covenanters.
The Scottish Covenanters were those who opposed the Stuart Kings of Britain trying to impose themselves as head of the church in place of Jesus Christ. Many Scots signed the National Covenant of 1638 and thereafter for the next fifty years were persecuted and punished for their beliefs that Jesus Christ was the head o fthe Scottish Kirk (church). Meeting in the hill and moor country the worshiped at great risk in the form of conventicles taking the service from deposed ministers or preachers.
Richard Cameron being one outlawed preacher who declared war on the king, his followers being called Cameronians. Hence the practices of their worship carried on through the years of the regiment, sentries armed at church service and the conventicle itself.
