LAKE TITICACA
Floating islands of reeds provide a home for some Peruvian people. They build homes from the reeds and eat the roots. They keep pigs and chickens. Above all there is no rent and the building materials are free. The lake, high in the mountains and surrounded by mountain peaks, is bordered by both Peru and Bolivia. Many of the islands are sacred to the old religion. (Drawing Pen)
A reed built a chapel on a floating island indicates a strange mixture of beliefs. The image of Mary and the crucifix are purely Christian, but Mam Pacha, the earth goddess, and offerings of foodstuffs are pagan. (Drawing Pen)
Boats made of the same reeds provide transport for these people. The boats are well constructed. They float high in the water and can move quickly when necessary. We crossed the lake to Bolivia in a modern launch. On the way, we called at one of the islands, still sacred to the old religion. (Drawing Pen)
