 MACHU PICCHU

After a fascinating switch back and forth ascent out of Cusco, every tiny station became an instant market. Later the train became dwarfed by the mountains which gradually increased in height as we progressed until white peaks came into sight.

At the station, two little girls in traditional dress offered to entertain us for a small fee. They were very solemn as they sang a local folk song and moved in unison. It was a delightful episode and well worth the fee. (Drawing Pen)

A fleet of minibusses met us at the station. Anxious for a business they went at breakneck speed up the switchback, unsurfaced road. A voice cried, "This is one adventure I could do without".(Drawing Pen)

The Hitching Post of the Sun, as this dramatic monument is known today, was sacred to the Incas. This altar of astronomically set stones indicated special times of the year when their priests would honour the Sun God. I could not resist putting in an Inca guard.                                                                                  (Drawing Pen

The Inca drawer bridge. mountain path out of Machu Picchu is hair raising, narrow and vertiginous. Logs could be withdrawn to prevent entry. Even the part leading to a lookout ,just round the corner to the left, the limit for tourists, is skary.
