Doon the Water Pairs

Played from Monday to Friday 14th - 18th July, the Club’s “Doon the Water” pairs competition, generously sponsored by Alasdair Blair, attracted a good entry from the town and beyond and had the added bonus of reasonable weather that included missing the forecast thunderstorms on Friday night. While the burgers burned on the barbeque the semi-finals between Steven Dickson and Shona Anderson and Alistair Munro and George McLellan and Kieran McGeachy and Jean Pentelow and Lorraine Brodie and Maureen MacInnes took place and resulted in wins for Steven and Shona and Lorraine and Maureen. By now a large crowd had gathered for the final inundating the burger stall and with most present expecting a convincing victory for Steven and Shona but this was not to be the case as Lorraine and Maureen took the first seven ends. A single shot by Steven in the eighth end gave his pair some hope but he burned the penultimate ninth end to leave Lorraine and Maureen with an unassailable lead to give them the cup and the distinction of being the first ladies’ pair to win. The trophy and prizes were presented by President Jimmy Anderson and Kenneth Blair on behalf of the sponsors.
There was further success for Maureen on the Saturday in the County finals that were held in Lochgilphead and Oban when she, along with Catherine McEachran, Mairi MacDonald and Marie Maguire, won the ladies’ fours. This was the club’s only win out of a quartet of teams competing in the finals.
