Opening Day 2014

On Saturday 12th April a miserable, cold and wet morning cleared to bright sunshine in the afternoon for the opening of Campbeltown Bowling Club’s Stronvaar green. Whilst there was very little chance of a soaking, there was still a strong possibility of some of the lighter players being blown off their feet as the wind rose and gusted heavily throughout the afternoon. President Jimmy Anderson opened the proceedings by welcoming his guests President Archie Clark and Vice President Catherine McGougan of the Argyll club before asking for a minute’s silence for members and former members who have passed away in the last year.
He then asked his wife and Lady President Shona to come forward to throw the first jack of the season that she did with accomplishment to the delight of the large crowd. Before play commenced she was  presented with a floral bouquet by five year old twins Hannah and Emma Miller. Although some of the players were still in hibernation, forty seven players filled the seven rinks to contest the traditional opening match between the President and Vice President Dugald Graham’s team that resulted in a five shot win for the President.  On completion of the match the players retired to the clubhouse for a very welcome afternoon tea.
Fixture lists are available in the club for what is scheduled to be a very busy season that really gets under way on Saturday 3rd May with the Robert Leishman Memorial 4’s quickly followed on Sunday 11th May with the greatly anticipated home match in the Scottish Counties Top Ten against the highly rated Edinburgh champions, Carrick Knowe.
