Open Pairs

On Saturday 7th June the Club held its Open Pairs competition that was generously sponsored by Donald McLean Contractors on what turned out to be, probably the wettest day of the year. The Met Office had been forecasting torrential rain and thunderstorms but when the players arrived for the 9.00am start it was at least warm although overcast. Within five minutes of play starting the heavens opened and never let up until the competition was postponed until Sunday due to flooding at the semi-final stage. The delayed matches on Sunday were between Archie Johnston and Bobby Dalziel and Hugh and Mairi MacDonald and Jimmy and Gary Anderson and Dugald Graham and David McCormick. The loss of eight shots in the first end quickly out an end to the MacDonald’s aspirations and likewise the loss of the first four ends saw off the Graham and McCormick challenge and leave a final between the club’s form players. This game was hotly contested with never more than a shot separating the teams as they entered the final end that saw twelve of the sixteen bowls within a foot of the jack and the one that mattered most, Jimmy’s, within two inches of it to give the Andersons the Aquila trophy and handsome winners’ cheques. Connor Saunders of Donald McLean Contractors presented the trophy and prizes on behalf of the sponsors.
