For those with small children, Platform 3 activity centre at Kirkby Stephen (017683 72363). Kirkby Stephen library hires out DVDs. Our caretaker Sarah runs a great ice-cream parlour by Brough Castle – mention Sanctuary Barn!

Settle-Carlisle – get train from Appleby or Kirkeby Stephen stations.

Swimming – Appleby Pool (01768 351212), Barnard Castle Pool (01833 690400), and Penrith Pool (01768 863450). Centre Parcs near Penrith also does Day Passes – contact Penrith TIC, and try out Llama Khama café on A66 nearby.

Churches – Kirkby Stephen, Appleby and Penrith very fine.

Tan Hill for lunch – good chance to see how wild it is in comfort!
Teesdale - Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle (01833 690606); and Killhope mining museum near Alston (01388 537505).
Near Penrith - Watermill at Little Salkeld; and Village Bakery at Melmerby. The Rheghed Centre/Cinema near Penrith (01768 868000). The Alhambra cinema in Penrith (01768 862400). Wetheriggs Pottery (01768 892733).
Dales - Hawes – Dales Museum (019 69 666210), Ropemaker and Wensleydale Cheese Factory (01969 667664).
And further afield, Kendal, Darlington or Carlisle for shopping, and the Lake District. Hadrians’ Wall, York and Durham are only 1-1/5 hours drive away!
If the weather is so bad as to snow, try the Carlisle Ski Club piste at Yad Moss, between Alston and Middleton! (01228 561634).
