"Few parts of our island are more majestic in scenery"

  1. Brough is our nearest village, with a small shop, doctors surgery etc, and an excellent castle to explore. It has a fine Farmers Market on the 3rd Saturday of each month.

  2. Our nearest town is Kirkby Stephen, with a wide range of local amenties (including the excellent Packhorse Stores, Ivan the butcher, and the unusual Acoustic Tearoom). In particular, try to get to Pendragon Castle, Stenskirth  and it's Poetry PathBessy Beck trout fishery/smokery and Orton Farmers Market (2nd Saturday of each month) are nearby.

  3. A good way to tour the Eden Valley is to follow Andy Goldworthy's Sheepfolds project. Penrith is well worth a visit, as it nearby Ullswater, but off the beaten track, Larch Cottage Nurseries is a must for the green fingered, as is Brougham Hall. You can come back via the excellent locally owned Farm Shop at the M6 Westmorland Services, and Bessy Beck trout fishery, with it's own smokery.

  4. Barnard Castle has the excellent Bowes Museum, and regular Farmers Markets, with High Force nearby.

  5. Further afield are;

  • and of course the Lake District (Penrith 30 minutes via A66; Kendal 40 minutes via A685).
