Aquatic insects

These groups of creatures, especially the  groups such as Caddis flies, Mayflies, Stone flies  are important both as creatures in their own right, but also as a food source for birds such as dippers, fish species and mammals such as water shrews.

They are also important indicators of water quality and are widely used in such surveys.
