SE1 Rebuild.

The rebuild on this little Mamod Stationary Engine was carried out in 2008. The Engine was purchased, by myself, from a Gentleman living in Baslow, Derbyshire. Although a bargain at the time, a lot of paintwork lay ahead. Unfortunately I no longer have a photograph of this Engine in the condition in which I aquired it so photographic documentation starts quite a way into the process........

......the Engine was stripped right down and luckily all original parts including the piston and safety valve were all deemed to be in a good and still serviceable condition. All the flaking paint was removed with nitromors and the Engine frame (as you can see to the left in the above photograph) also had all the paint removed as the colour was incorrect, this should be a light green and not black !!!!.

The boiler end cap had evidence of a little "Zincification" but this has not been an issue at all particularly after giving all the brightwork and boiler a good buffing with Brasso.

The baseplate was given several coats of gloss red paint, the firebox was treated to several coats of HT matt black paint and the little Engine frame was once again a shade of pastel green, as it was intended originally.

As this Engine is a fairly early example of "raised base" SE1, provision was originally made in the pressing of the steel base for an early cylindrical "wick" type of burner.

This little twin wick burner was aquired from Forest Classics to complete the period look.......

All in all, this little Engine was a pretty easy project and a good starting point regarding a rebuild for a novice such as myself and here is the finished result of a good running little SE1 complete with that period burner.
