MORE DOUGLAS PLAYERS There have been a number of players , particularly from the Douglasdale FC page who have, over a number of years, progressed to the senior ranks. Others signed for senior clubs straight from school or from the minor ranks ALEX 'ECKY' BERNARD Senior players actually from Douglas, the West and Glespin, however, are few in numbers. One player who did make the grade was Alex 'Ecky' Bernard from Douglas West.
Ecky was a star player for Douglas Water Thistle in the early 1920's winning a Hozier cup medal in season 1922-23
Ecky signed for Leith Athletic, a formidable team in those days and went on to play in the winning team for Leith against Solway Star in the final of the Scottish Qualifying Cup in season 1925/26

Tom Jarvie, born in Glasgow in 1916, signed for Hamilton Academicals in 1935. He was resident in Douglas at that time and had been signed by Douglasdale as a schoolboy, he moved to Douglas Water Thistle and then to the Accies. Man Utd wanted to sign him but he decided to go to Hamilton, who at that time were one of the best teams in Scotland, so that he could continue his veterinary studies. Tom was a skilful player with great passing ability and played for the Scottish League team against the Irish League in 1939 He was named as one of the top four Accies players of all time at a Hall of Fame Dinner in 2002 ...................................... JOHN SCOTT John Scott signed for Hamilton Academicals from Douglasdale JFC in 1935. A left full back, he was the regular pick in the Accies side up to the outbreak of the war in 1939. John played in the game against Hearts in 1937 which saw the crowd record for Douglas Park broken when 28,000 spectators turned up for the Scottish Cup tie. WALTER 'Attie' SCOTT Attie, born in Douglas in 1932, played for Douglasdale in the late 40's before signing for Falkirk in 1950. In 1953 he moved to Hamilton Accies, and then on to Dumbarton and latterly to Halifax Town ............................................. Bobby Kelso and Bob Shankly

TOMMY STEWART Tommy Stewart of Scogtonhead Farm and latterly Main St, Douglas was another fine local player, playing from and early age in the Starks Cup at Primary School and then with Lanark Grammar school in national competitions. Tommys Starks Cup medals
Tommy Stewart (bottom left of photo) in the Lanark Grammar School team Tommy signed for Douglas Water Thistle as a sixteen year old. He was a dedicated player and a hard trainer, and would think nothing of travelling on his push bike from Scrogtonhead to the training at Ponfeigh. He starred in the famous Scottish Cup victory over the holders Arthurlie in September 1937, as the following report highlights
A Hozier Cup runners up medal presented to Tommy Stewart in season 1936/37 Tommy loved his football, playing also for Auchinleck Talbot and Wishaw Juniors. After his playing days were over he was a spectator at many a game. His nephew Tom Bairner would take him to games across the country from amateur to international level. His wife Chrissie would know exactly what was coming when the phone rang, and Tommy would be quickly changed, waiting in eager anticipation for Tom to pick him up, and they were off again. The highlight of his travels was to taking in a game at Ibrox and into the hospitality suite to savour the history of his favourite team-Glasgow Rangers .................................................... JOHN TELFER Another fine player was Douglas born and bred John Telfer, who after his national service came back to the village and signed for Douglas Water Thistle. John, nickname 'Teff' was then signed for Ayr United where he played Left Half in the older namned positions for about 8 years. This was in the years when Ayr United were a force in the Scottish First Division, and Teff played many a game against the Auld Firm with distinction. ........................................................................................... THE DOCS' The Doherty family from Douglas produced four extemely good players in Gary, Stevie, Jim and Ian Ian Doherty, one of the best players this valley has ever produced, should have had a long senior football career. He was due to sign for Celtic from Albion Rovers after producing a great display against them, but was unable to agree terms. ................................... Douglas Amateur players Danny Masterton and Danny McDougall both went senior to Clyde and Hamilton Accies respectively ...................................... THE BATTONS Andrew and Jim Batton, originally from Douglas West were also very talented players both playing for the 'Dale at one stage.The lads were prominent throughout their school carrer helping the West to win the Starks Cup - no mean feat for such a small school. The West school team sported an unusual claret and amber quartered jersey. In a Starks cup game against Biggar Jim scored 6 of the goals in a 9-1 victory After school they both started playing for Douglas Water Primrose as teenagers, and both went on to sign for the 'Dale'. Jim also had a spell with Shotts Bon Accord Jim went senior with Hibs, then later to join his brother Andrew who was playing with Greenock Morton - one of the top teams in Scotland in that era. Ironically Jim's first game for Morton was against the Hibs team comprising the 'famous five'. Andrew had previously signed for Manchester City but could not settle and returned North for a long career with Morton. JIM BATTON OBITUARY The village was saddened to learn of the death of Jim Batton, a well loved and respected member of a well known Douglas family. Jim died on March 23, and although his health had deteriorated in recent months you could often find him on the High Street in Lanark, (his place of residence for some years,) where he was thrilled to speak to anyone he recognised from the village. .......................................
