DOUGLAS

    WESTONIANS

1931 saw the formation of a new team- Douglas Westonians who were founded in April of that year and were admitted to the South Lanarkshire Juvenile League in August.  They played their games at Douglas West in the valley on the right hand side of the Douglas West road near the left hand bend after Scrogton Farm. The pitch was much criticised for its undulations but no doubt the Westonians saw that as a distinct home advantage.

They played their first game against Glendale Park Avenue, a Motherwell club but lost the game by five goals to three.

                         ...............................................

They soon got off the mark and defeated Bogside 2-0 in a rowdy confrontation at the West.

The following report of the Westonians game in November 1931 against Whitelaw Albion in a 3rd round Lanarkshire cup-tie, outlines the difficulties teams had in travelling to remote areas in those days

The visitors were over an hour late in arriving. Misdirected, they had been at Douglas Water and were partly undressed in the hall there, before it was discovered that they were five miles away from their intended destination. Then their motor bus broke down near Gateside Farm and they had to start walking up the brae in their football kit.
In the first seven minutes Albion got two snap goals before the Westonians woke up and bombarded the visitors goal. Sim scored before the interval after good work by Drennan.
In the second half the Westonians kept up the pressure in the gathering gloom and Sim equalised. Albion restored their lead following a mix-up in the home defence, however the game had to be abandoned as darkness fell with half an hour still to play. The Westonians hope to be awarded the tie as it is doubtful if the Coatbridge outfit would repeat their hazardous journey again

Westonians: Edwards, Mc Meekin and McCartney; J Clelland, Jas Hastings and Anderson; Sim, Ronney, John Hastings, Drennan and R Clelland

               .......................................

The Westonians began to make a name for themselves as a clever football team though able to look after themselves, as the following report on their game against Carluke side Castle hill United shows.

            .........................................

Below is a report of a Westonians match against Motherwell Rovers in 1931.  It is interesting to note the last post being played by F Cornelius as a mark of respect for the Celtic goalkeeper, John Thomson who had died on the field during a collision with the opposing forward

                   ...................................

Westonians won the Menzies Cup in 1932. The Drennan listed in the Westonians team was Robert 'Happy' Drennan, the brother of Willie Drennan still resident in the village. Willie himself went on to play for Douglas West Rovers in the late '40's.
                    ..............................

As was the case with so many of the local teams the Westonians lasted only a few years and in 1933 could not fulfil their fixtures.  A new team formed at Glespin, Kennox Welfare were allowed to take on the Westonians remaining fixtures in the South Lanarkshire Juvenile League for the remainder of the season.
