Hampden and the Amateurs Posted by Roger Bainbridge on 26 January 2008 Hi Roger, Glad you enjoyed the site, they were great days indeed. The pubs were packed, buses were queued up for Hampden, and there was a great buzz around the village. A magical time to be a 6 year old! It is your dad in the photo talking to Frank McMillan and Happy Hamilton. I could write a book on Wembley trips alone, but I'd better not!! if I want to keep whats left of my hair! Posted by Kenny Sludden on 26 January 2008 Bang on Kenny. That's my dad talking to Frank. A vociferous Scotland supporter with a Lancashire accent! I'm sure when we went to Hampden, we were in the old North stand. You had to get anti biotics before you went in there. How times change. It occured to me that there was a great community spirit in our wee village which the Amateurs played a strong part in maintaining. Roger Posted by roger Bainbridge on 04 March 2008 Hampden and the Amateurs Hi Kenny, Fantastic site with many memories. I particularly remember the 1974 final at Hampden. The double decker from Douglas up to the toon! It was all too much for a 6 year old. I even think there is a photo of my dad at the Heid Inns car park en route to Wembley in 1975? Great days Kenny. Thanks for the memories. Roger Posted by Roger Bainbridge on 26 January 2008 Corehouse Thistle My Dad William (Willie) Dunlop played with Corehouse thistle in the thirties. I have a team photo taken at that time. I wondered if you wanted a copy I could email to you for your web site. I don't know any of the other players but there is an old man at the back who looked like he could have been a coach,he was actually my great grandfather's brother John Bryson from Kirkfieldbank. Best Wishes Audrey Posted by Audrey Lawson on 09 December 2007 Thanks Audrey, if you send it through I will post it on the site Best Regards Kenny Posted by kenny sludden on 10 December 2007 Douglas Westonians Hi, having been born in Douglas Cottage Hospital in 1948, but living in England most of my life , I was thilled to find your website regarding Douglasdale ect. My Dad John Edwards played for Westonians in goal and outfield when required and he would have been pleased to see it awknowledged in your articles. I also came across my schoolchums from the past ie. Davie Anderson/ Buster Stratford Geordie Prosser to name a few- I lived next door to Buster in Hagshaw Drive later moving to Manse View Terrace Regards and Thanks John Edwards Posted by John Edwards on 11 November 2007 Hi John, thanks for contacting me. We share the same birth-year, although I came to Douglas when I was 10 years old. You probably left soon after I arrived, because the names you mention are the guys I went around with in my late teens and early twenties. Info on the Westonians is scarce, so if you have any details at all please let me know. Is your father in the Westonians team photo?. The goalkeeper in that team was Jock Hastings, who lived down the road from you in Hagshaw -you will probably remember his son Jim. Best Regards Kenny Posted by Kenny Sludden on 13 November 2007 Memories Hi Kenny, remember you from the distant past. I never played with the Dale or the Amateurs, remember Shilfy? but played against them often for Douglas Water Thistle and Lanark United. Your site certainly brought back many memories and names which I had forgotten about. Posted by Norrie Woods on 01 November 2007 Hi Norrie, Good to hear from you. I saw you at a Lanark Utd game recently, you're wearing pretty well! Shulf was some guy - even when we were playing 3 games a week he was at a game somewhere during the rest of the week watching the opposition or scouting. Best Regards Kenny Posted by Kenny Sludden on 04 November 2007 Thanks for your reply. Remind yourself to me next time you are at Moor Park, at my age,71, the memory lapses a wee bit!!. I`m at most of the home games. Cheers, keep up the good work. There is a site about Douglas Water, but not as personal as yours. We won the West of Scotland Cup, a great feat at the time, in 1955, but it scarecly gets a mention.
