Mary II died on 28th December 1694, after which William III continued to reign alone.

With only one remaining heir to the throne, who, in view of her age and the number of miscarriages she had suffered in recent years, was unlikely to have any more children, it was necessary for Parliament to legislate to secure the sucession.
