The Cinemas of Neath, Port Talbot and Llanelli.
Just a few words about some of the major cinemas just outside Swansea.
The Plaza Cinema Port Talbot.A classic example of 1930's cinema building. Opened on 25th March 1940 showing major movies until bingo took over in 1983. Bingo only lasted 2 years and it re-opened as a cinema in Oct 1985. In 1988 it was converted into 4 screens, it closed in Jan 1999. Plans are underway for a major arts complex within the building. | Llanelli Entertainment Centre.Opened as the Odeon on 18th June 1938 with seating for 1450. The cinema was tripled in 1971. It’s main auditorium was remodeled into a fully equipped theatre in the 80‘s and renamed the Llanelli Entertainment Centre, later renamed again as Theatre Elli. Under threat of closure due to the possibility of a new arts centre being built in the town. Theatr Elli was designated a Grade II Listed building in October 2009. | | Windsor Cinema NeathThe Windsor Cinema opened on 25th May 1936 with a restaurant and roof garden. The building was noted for a collection of stained glass windows which were lit from within. Rank bought it in 1976 and it was closed in June 1977. It later became a popular nigh club called 'The Talk Of The Abbey' It was demolished in 2006 and replaced with a block flats using the stained glass in its design. | | |
