Cafes

I love to visit a cafe through the day whilst out skiing.

The Cafe at Nordseter is a famous stopping off point and I am sure nearly all skiers call in on their tour or even make the Cafe at Nordseter the objective for the day.       I love the place as it is so similar to my business in Glenmore, where we do ski hire, have an outdoor shop, provisions and a cafe.     I can very freely relate to what goes on there.      You can get all sorts of hot drinks but PLEASE!    Where are the lattes and cappucinos in nice mugs or glasses? Update in 2010.  Lovely new display cabinet selling home baked Danish Bakery!

Nordseter Cafe's new Danish Bakery.    Yum!

Norway seems to be lagging behind in simple catering.   You have to drink from paper cups and eat off paper plates.        The shop sells all sorts of groceries and convenience needs.  There is a well stocked ski and pulk hire, where you can also buy waxes and so on as well as lots of ski boots, gloves, hats, sunglasses and sledges........the list goes on.

Back in Sjusjoen there is the Sjusjovangen cafe next to KIWI supermarket.     Nicely decked out in blue decor.     They do hot drinks at very reasonable prices in proper mugs and like many places in Norway pizza is popular.     In the evening the menu changes to steak meals and so on, which I have been told are very good!   Maggie recommends the hot waffles.   WiFi connection too.

Also in Sjusjoen is the large cafe and bar which is part of the Caravan and Hytte Site reception building.  (Sjusjotunet Hytte og Caravansenter)   It is just off the Birkebeiner loipe.  Look out for the sign just where the Birkebeiner Loipe passes through the tunel under the Storasen road. They serve hot drinks in real mugs!   Not paper cups!  as well as alcoholic drinks.  The beers must be the best value in Sjusjoen.  There are snacks and meals to be had and once again Pizza is popular.  Try the chicken and chips too.  There is also the chance of live music on weekend evenings.

At  the bottom of the hill in Sjusjoen is Verthuset Fjellheim a large cafe and convenience store.      Here you can buy all sorts of food and drinks.    It is handy for fast food through the day and nice meals at night (open to 10) as well as beer and wine.      The British army have a deal here as I found out one night. I ordered a beer, it was half price.  Remarkable!    until the girl spotted "your hair is too long to be in the army" and the beer reverted to full price.   Tip of the day.....look like an army type!

Out on the Loipe at Natrudistilen there is the cafe at the top of the ski lift.      They do all sorts of lovely waffles and cakes as well as notable hot chocolate.     On the trip to Mesnali you will pass by the base of the ski lift where there is a cafe too so if you have time, call in.

Ski to Ljosheim   There is the cafe and bar in the centre of the Ljosheim Hytte settlement.  There is also a small convenience store too.   Serving all the usual hot drinks and waffles.   A good objective for a day ski tour.

At the base station of the Sjusjoen Ski Centre ski lift is a great cafe too.     This is a useful stopping off point on any ski tour towards Mesnali.     A bus runs from here at 15:57 every day back to Sjusjoen.

On the way to Lillehammer at the Olympic Stadium is the Ski Stua Cafe which seems to be open only now and then, however when you get down into the town be sure to call in at at least on of the cafes on the main street.

I now have a report that Pellestova Cafe is now open again after a few years of closure.    Good to know.

Hornsjo Hotel is well set up as a cafe too.     Go into the reception and turn right into the dining room.     What a wonderful remote location where you will be sure of shelter and a hot drink served by pretty girls.   They keep the cafe open all year for the passing skier or mountainbiker.  Keep it up!

At the northern end of the ski area is Ilsetera and Gaistaova at the top of Hafjell who both offer a cafe service to passing skiers.

Shopping in Sjusjoen

First of all Sjusjoen is not Oxford Street but for general needs on a ski holiday there is what you need.

Kiwi Supermarket in Sjusjoen at Graaten is fantastically well stocked catering for the needs of the large self catering hytte population.     Kiwi is Scandinavia's largest discount supermarket chain so remarkably for Sjusjoen you can buy quality own brand "First Price brand" groceries for often less than UK supermarket prices.     The fruit juices are great value as are the great range of fish. Buy frozen prawns loose from the freezer at 20 Nok (€2.30) per Kilo.   Beautiful Salmon Steaks "First Price Brand" for the equivalent of 40p (€0.46) per slice!    It's possible to live cheap in Sjusjoen if you follow my tips!   They have whole salmon in stock.     It's a busy shop.  Much more pleasant than Tesco......Kiwi should have the catch phrase "Every Little Helps"

Down below Kiwi at Verthuset Fjellheimen.    At one end of the large cafe is the VG convenience store.     Bread  milk, toiletries all you need in a convenient location.

For season 2010 Sport 1 a national sports shop chain has opened a spanking new shop next door to Kiwi, with a big range of hats, gloves, clothing and waxes as well as a place to hire xc ski equipment if you need to.   There are Hamax sledges and many brands of xc and alpine skis for sale.     Not only is it a shop, it is a booking centre for all sorts of activities such as ice fishing, dog sledding as well as arranging ski instruction.   It is good to see new development in Sjusjoen!

Sport 1 Sjusjoen

Up above Kiwi and to the left on the road to the old Sjusjoen Fjellstua is Sjusjoen Sport and Activity  This is part of the Hoyfjells empire.    The shop is full of all sorts of outdoor gear.    Sledges, Pulks, Snowshoes, gas for cabins, parafin, gloves, hats, moonboots, socks, clothing, souvenirs, fishing gear.....the list goes on.        Once again you can book all sorts of activities here and if you need ski hire why not call them before hand on 0047 62 36 30 04.  To link to their web site CLICK HERE

Sjusjoen Sport

The cafe at Nordseter has a convenience store which is handy if you are hytte or apartment accommodated in Nordseter.    Most of what you need food wise, as well as a well stocked ski hire and general outdoor equipment store.   Lots of hats, gloves, waxes, sledges for hire, skis and boots for sale and pulks.   A well known place for every skier to visit in the Sjusjoen/ Nordseter area.
