Hostels in Sjusjoen area

Sjusjoen offers a range of budget accommodation.  For those wishing to save a bit and experience the hostel atmosphere Sjusjoen Fjellheimen is a great choice.     A firm favorite with UK and Eire visitors as well as travel groups.     The British army is often based here too, on winter exercises.      If you are travelling and wish a night in Lillehammer, Lillehammer Youth Hostel is a fine option....right on the station.

Fjellheimen, which means in English mountain home, was built as one of Sjusjoen's oldest hotels, established in 1906.    For a spell until recently it was part of the Norwegain Youth Hostels Association then was run by the owners of the Hoyfjells Hotel. In September 2009 it was sold to another owner who promise geat things!   I'v never actually stayed there but many friends and aquantainces frequent Fjellheimen telling me that one of the great points is the food!         Vertshuset Fjellheimen next door is where you take your meals.

Fjellheimen is located just to the right of the main road up towards the Kiwi Supermarket on the small road leading to Rustad Hotel. Like Rustad it is on the edge of the Lake with once again easy access to the ski trails. It is actually a very good location to start a ski trip from.
The accommodation is simple, consisting the main building and two annexes, with a total of 90 beds in 1/2/3 and 4 bedded rooms.    The toilets and showers are off the corridor, and a few rooms have private facilities.

The main building offers a sitting room, dining area and what is great a kitchen for self catering.       Just across the road is the lively Laven Bar...a great place for live music on Friday and Saturday nights.
Reception is at Vertshuset Fjellheimen which is about 150 meters walk away.

vertshuset fjellheimen

Vertshuset Fjellheimen is where you take meals if you want that option. About 150 metres walk away. The food is great, being an evening buffet of cold meats and fish dishes, followed by a hot dish as much as you can eat and lovely home made sweets.     The Vertshuset Fjellheimen also has a small convenience store for cans of juice, toothpaste, bits and pieces , indeed anything you may have forgotten.
Dining area for Fjellheimen guests       Get a drink here...Look an army type!

You can also get cafe meals and drinks at Vertshuset Fjellheimen.   A place for a beer in the evenings... I like that.    One night I went in and ordered a beer.   30 NOK   impossible, half price.      Transpires that the British Army have a special deal.    Took a while before the girl worked out that  "your hair is too long to be in the army"    "That will be 60 NOK"    So   Tip of the evening....Look like an army type!

LILLEHAMMER VANDRERHJEM

(LILLEHAMMER YOUTH HOSTEL)

Tel    0047 61 26 00 24          post@stasjonen.no

Lillehammer Youth Hostel although not strictly speaking within the sjusjoen Ski area is very much part of the traditions of going to and from Sjusjoen.  Many people I know use the Hostel when arriving by train late, often to avoid the extortion of a taxi ride or to be able to catch an early train back to Oslo. Thats because the Hostel is right on the Station.  Indeed it is part of the Staion buildings.    Could not be more convenient for both the busses and trains.
The hostel offers modern facilities in an informal atmosphere.   All rooms have on suite facilities such as TV and WiFi.    There is a self catreing kitchen for evening meals however restaurants and cafes are within a few minutes walk. Its very easy to pick up a hot dog or something from the newspaper shop (Narvesen) at the entrance to the hostel.     There is a breakfast buffet. Bed linen and towels are included in the overnight price.
You can also rent an apartment with a living room and kitchenette.
2009 prices.....Single room 695 NOK......Twin room 840 NOK....3 bedded room 990 NOK.....4 bedded room.....1200 NOK.....Apartment for upto 6 persons 1650 NOK....Bed in dorm....330 NOK        If you are a member of YHA, SYHA, YHANI or any Youth Hostels assn International card holder you get a 15% discount on these prices.
Everyone I know who stays there says its great.  Maggie loved her stay on her way to Trondheim and Roger stayed while coaching the British Nordic Development squad.  Keep the windows closed though, the trains and busses run all night.

If you wish to stay at the hostel it could be a good budget option, however you would need to take the bus upto Sjusjoen or Nordseter every morning and time your tours to catch a bus back.      The Hostel has to be a great option if you want to Alpine ski at Hafjell.    Great bus access right from the door.
