Hotels in and around Sjusjoen

Sjusjoen and the surrounding area have only a few hotels. Lovely friendly places where outdoor folk are always greeted.    Outlined are the ones I know in no particular order.

SJUSJOEN HOYFJELLS HOTEL

Tel 0047 6234 7670.    e mail  post@sjusjoen-hotel.no

The hotel is situated on the outskirts of the main village, in a secluded location. There are surprisingly good views of the lake so ask for a room at the front!   Dont be put off by its concrete block appearance as inside it is warm and cosy.    Certainly not 5 star luxury but warm, great food and friendly staff. There is also a fantastic swimming pool and sauna.....It has to be a fine feature which puts this hotel into the surprise category.

There is direct access to the ski tracks.   Just come out of the main door and turn right, its as easy as that.   There is a ski room under the staff accommodation. Pop your skis on at the door!
The bed rooms are clean and functional, nothing flash but all you need.   Outdoor folk are so at home here.

Breakfast is a hearty affair, served from 8 to 10am.  A buffet with all sorts of crispbreads, jams and cheeses, including the getost goats cheese.   As much tea, coffee and juices as you want. Boiled eggs, toast and cereals.    You won't go hungry and make sure you fill up your flask and make up a packed lunch from the breakfast buffet. Then get out there on your skis!
You can have a midday meal but who wants that, when there are so many skiing possibilities to be had.
Dinner is the next highlight of the day and yes this has to be one of Hoyfjell hotel's strong points.    Dinner starts at 6 and you can delay until about 7.30 if you wish. If you do delay you will miss the half hour piano performance by a delightful Bulgarian Lady.  Once again a buffet. Start with small dishes of fish or sliced meats. Smartly dressed waitresses scurry around offering drinks.  A beer is good value (for Norway) at 60 NOK.   Its dead relaxed with no stuffyness. Grab a plate and help yourself to a hearty hot second course.  And more if you want but save yourself for the sweets or cheese and biscuits. The sweets are home made and delicious.   After tea or coffee, just help yourself and move on to the sitting area just outside the dining room.

Sit and relax with a coffee.

Around 9.30 down in the basement bar area the dance music starts. The Bulgarian couple play all sorts a catchy tunes and please give them some support......The Norwegians seem so reluctant to let their hair down.     If there are not so many customers go to reception to get a drink as the bar may be unstaffed.
The owners, Klaus and Annelisa are pretty entreprenerial, also owning the Fjellheimen (Hostel) , many cabins to rent, the Verthuset Fjellheimen (a large cafe, convenience store, dining area and bar) a ski shop and a bus company......Lillehammer Ringsaker Turbiler (LRT) which is based in a garage behind the hotel.   I like entrepreneurs...like me!
         LRT Bus Company too.

 RUSTAD HOTEL AND FJELLSTUA

Tel 0047 62 36 34 08        E mail post@rustadhotel.com

Rustad Hotel is without doubt the most cozy hotel accommodation in Sjusjoen.   There is an atmosphere of cozyness created by the old log walled interior.   The sitting areas are absoloutely beautiful, Multiple rooms all rustic designs, furniture to match and lots of after dinner coffee to sit with to absorb the beauty of the internal design.  The Hotel is situated right on the edge of the lake with immeditate access to the ski tracks.
The Rustad has accommodation for 90 guests in 46 rooms all with shower, WC and TV.   I have never been in a main Rustad bedroom but by all accounts they are absolutely beautiful....all you need. There is a sauna in the basement and annex customers are completely free to use it.     Rustad consists of the main building and two annex.   The annex are lower cost rooms and perfectly nice, with total access to the main hotel and all it's facilities.   Tip of the day.  If you want a taste of luxury and you are on a budget, call up Rustad and ask for the annex.

Meals are all taken in the dining room in the main building.    Breakfast starts at 8.30 and is a usual buffet affair, of cheeses, cold cuts of meat, sliced fish, breads, crispbread and cereals.   Make up you packed lunch from the breakfast table and off you go. One critisism is if you want an early start to put in a long days ski trip...thats a slight problem....Supermarket the evening before?      There is a lovely buffet lunch if you wish, but I am always out on my skis.     Dinner is taken at 6.30, prompt and is a three course meal served to you.  Soups and a variety of starters, followed by a main course of meats , fish and fresh cooked veg, potatoes and rice and so on.    Very high quality cooking and the staff always ask if you would like some more.   If they dont, you must ask.   Then come sweets and if you want fruit and then it's time to retire to the rustic, beautiful sitting areas, which one is a problem as there are many...You choose.     For an outdoor hotel the meal is a little early but run with it as the quality is high.      One of the rooms is all set up for live music and dancing but that seems to have fallen by the wayside.     However if you want music and dancing the Laven Bar and Hoyfjells Hotel is only a short walk away.

Relax with tea or coffee in the antique rooms

 Rustad Cabins and Apartments

Like many hotel entrepreneurs in these parts Rustad has developed a series of Cabins.    A Hytta in the woods, every Norwegian families dream.    There are six cabins all around the Rustad, most with views of the lake and all beautiful. Open fires, TV, Saunas, Showers, washing machines.   Perfect. They range from 5 to 12 person occupancy, so if you are a group and fancy some luxury, why not give Rustad a call.

 SJUSJOEN FJELLSTUA

Sjusjoen Fjellstua was a favorite place of mine.   15 very happy holidays with Irene were spent there.      Sjusjoen Fjellstua was a institution among the cross country skiing fraternity for just over 100 years.

sjusjoen fjellstua

Happy Memories of Sjusjoen Fjellstua

On 30th April 2007 the hotel closed after the owners decided to sell out to a property company who have now converted the building into appartments for sale.     A family business for over 100 years.......But thats what happens.       How can we judge what business owners wish to do.    I know the feeling being a business owner dealing with the holiday public on a daily basis, I can understand!      Good luck to all involved with such a happy place in their retirement and new careers.
There was always a friendly welcome.

SJUSJOEN PANORAMA HOTEL

Sjusjoen Panorama Hotel lies forlorn and abandoned on the hillside overlooking the village.      This hotel is a victim of the huge move of Norwegian families to Hytta and cabins.    So......If you fancy a challenge there is a hotel lying empty.        Go for it.

 NORDSETER FJELLSTUA

Tel 0047 61 26 40 08      e mail     bente.nordseter@online.no

Nordseter Fjellstua, although strictly speaking not in Sjusjoen is only 6 km from Sjusjoen in the settlement of Nordseter. Very much a central part of the vast XC ski area.     If you are going to Nordseter rather than Sjusjoen the same 17:20 bus from Lillehammer is the bus to catch.
Nordseter Fjellstua is a typical outdoor mountain lodge aimed at outdoor people.   First built in 1937 with many renovations since.   Like many outdoor hotels there is a real atmosphere of the Fjells and the outdoors.  24 bedrooms all with the usual facilities and a sauna area on the first floor.     Like the Rustad in Sjusjoen there is a smattering of antiques and "old rooms" where you can sit and drink coffee and read after your meal.        Its a family run hotel, run by the Martinsen family for now 5 generations. I like that......not part of some corporate chain......nice to give my money to a non corporation accommodation provider as it puts money directly into the local community

nordseter fjellstua

Nordseter Fjellstua

Like the Rustad meals are a set menu affair.   The dining room is big enough for 100 people and is on the ground floor.  Breakfast is from 8am and is the usual buffet with cheeses and cold meats, cereal and so on with the packed lunch bags provided to give you the chance to make up your lunch.     Dinner is at 7pm and is a set 3 course meal and is yummy, with home made soups and sweets.  Ask for more if you need more there is always plenty.     After dinner there is unlimited coffee and tea so sit in the antique old rooms and relax with a book.
During the afternoon there is a lovely touch.    Come in after skiing around 4pm for example and there is a trolly, full of tea and coffee. Just help yourself, cakes too.        Just what I need!
Skiing from Nordseter is once again easy....However to start at Nordseter means if you are going towards the fjells it is all uphill.
Once again the owners are runaway entrepreneurs.   Nordester Fjellstua AS is also a business renting apartments and Hytta.    Up above the Fjellstua across the road is the apartment block of 5 different categories from 4 person to 9 person capacity.      Below the fjellstua is a series of small cabins for upto 5 persons.   Dinky wee cabins!        So once again look at these cabins if you are a group or club.     Check out the "Cabins to Rent" section of this website.  If you stay in the cabins you can still take your meals in the hotel.  Just ask.

NORDSETER SPORTELL

Tel 0047 61 26 18 00         e mail    post@nordsetersportell.no

Its encouraging to see new businesses springing up and Nordester Sportell is such!
The Hotel lies at the lower end of the hamlet so even more of a climb up for the skiing but dont let that put you off.       A big new place with over 100 hundred rooms.   There is the old building and the new building with rooms with all the usual good facilities.    I have to admit that I have not experienced the new Hotel but from all accounts this is not going to be a bad place to stay!         The food looks lovely and its great to see things springing back into life.

HORNSJO HOYFJELLS HOTEL

Tel 0047 61 26 40 64     e mail    hohotell@online.no

Hornsjo Hotel is certainly not in Sjusjoen as it lies right at the NE extremity of the vast XC ski region. Part of the Sjusjoen ski area so included!    A remote place at the end of the road from Oyer, the settlement just a few km north on Lillehammer, but what  a wonderful remote location looking out to the east over Horn Lake, towards Osterdalen, and the snow covered Fjells.
When I have been customers with baggage have been arriving by snowcat.     That doesn't happen at the posh hotels of London!     I understand Hornsjo was at one time Norway's largest Fjell Hotel and has survived and is doing well as it is now part of a outdoor centre for young people, a bit like a local authority outdoor centre in this country (UK).
A bright airy place                                       Relax in the Hornsjo pool

hornsjo sitting room   hornsjo swimming pool

It's a bright airy place with huge, yes huge common areas and massive picture windows looking out over the lake.    I remember Hornsjo many years ago as a destination for a skiing lunch with a huge creaking cold table and help yourself.        Maybe times have changed and now a corner of the dining area is a cafe and kiosk open all year round for guests who pass on their skis or montain bikes.      Coffee, tea, cakes, soup and Norwegian waffles are served by smiling young blond ladies. A great reason to ski there I have to say.    Read more about Hornsjo Cafe in the "Cafes and Shops" section.
There are 70 bedrooms with private facilities.  Simple style, light and airy.      There are 2 swimming pools, a large 14 meter X 6 metre and a childrens pool and two saunas!
This is a remote place and a days ski destination in itself.       From Sjusjoen its quite a long ski day there and back.    ( See "ski tour suggestions" section )             Hornsjo is a stopping off point on the Troll loipe, the long distance loipe from Venabu in the north.    How nice that swimming pool must be for the tired skier!
To get to Hornsjo Hotel from Lillehammer its a taxi as there is no bus along the Hornsjo vegen.     If the snow is big a snowcat will collect you. Different and exciting way to arrive.
A great place to go as a retreat, chill out and get away from the pressures of life.

ILSETRA HOTEL

HAFJELLSTOPPEN

Tel 0047 61 27 52 52       firmapost@ilsetra.no

Ilsetra Hotel lies at the Summit of the Hafjell Alpine Ski area.    Right on the northeren edge of the Nordseter- Sjusjoen XC ski area.     Again a lovely place to stay.   Lots of facilities and very upmarket too, with a ski pub, restaurant, (The Red Room and the Fin Room) wine bar.  There is live music too.
The hotel has room for 240 guests with a total of 96 rooms.
