Landscapes

                   1. Peak District Moorland ( Watercolours )

This landcape is one of my personal favourites.

A thin cloud covers the sky over one of Derbyshire's many edges ( in this image Carl Wark, as seen from Lower Burbage Bridge). A brook flows through the heather-stained moorland hills, showering mossy boulders as it tumbles  out of the picture.

            2. Mount Fuji: Sunset ( Watercolour )

On holiday in Japan we strolled from the hotel at dusk to enjoy a panorama of wonderful Mt. Fuji. A flock of birds calling harshly and fighting over scraps of food made a stark contrast to the peaceful view of the misty volcano.

3. Fun on the River ( Gouache )

Having painted the boats, figures, river and background of this imaginary scene, there was a distinct lack of contrast, .After some thought and with bated breath, the trees were put into place, blotting out some of the original buildings, but bringing the river into focus.

4. Canal Watchers( Watercolours )

Another imagined scene, though there are plenty of similar places. The people on the bridge were added later to enliven an otherwise static landscape. The water is pleasingly disturbed by the smaller boat's wake under the bridge , but calm and deep to the left, with waves catching light from the sky.

                   5. Whitby Abbey After Dark ( Charcoal )

Returning to our camp site at Saltwick Nab after an evening in Whitby, the ruined abbey loomed against a twilit sky calling for a photo. Later, charcoal seemed the most obvious medium to catch the eerie lights in the windows and reflections in the reedy pools.

            6. A Path Through the Woods ( Gouache )

Patterns created by sunlight and shade playing on trunks and boughs of trees are always fascinating. The scratched undergrowth is washed over on  the left to take the eye along the path to the shadowy figure staring at the woods on the other side of the lake.
