Life Drawing

1.

Life drawing needs a great deal of concentration. Obviously, the pose is important - the placing of the arms, legs, torso and head in proper relationships with each other - but so is the depiction of the muscles, bones , hair and  shading. Keeping the various parts of the body in proportion with each other adds another layer of difficulty. The model here has taken an interesting pose with her right arm under her left knee and the legs crossed.

2.

The same model in the same pose, but seen from a different position in the studio. Charcoal pencils and ink washes were used in both drawings.

3.

Pen and ink is a difficult medium for life drawing. Once the ink is on the paper there is no way to rub it out - see the mark over her left shoulder and the nearby poorly drawn hand. In spite of these faults, there is something about the image which is pleasing to the eye. Shading is expressed under the jaw bone and down the spine with watery ink.

4.

Again, charcoal pencil was used to capture this model's fine pose. The shading was produced by smudging the soft medium with a finger.

5.

The foreshortening on the model's raised right leg has worked well. Once more, the medium is charcoal pencil, smudged for shading effects.
