Life in the area during World War I

There were many changes at home during the war. Blackout regulations were in force, with no street lighting. Pubs were under government control with strict licensing laws. The newspapers show a climate of fear, where the public was urged to look out for suspicious people and to watch what they said about shipping and troop movements. At the same time, some things continued as normal. Some Avoch “fisher girls” still left to go south for the herring. Many local societies continued to meet. Tourism continued to attract visitors.
