SOFT ROCK

The museum's outreach programme was awarded a major grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund to interpet some of George Bain's work and the Pictish stones of the Easter Ross area in the form of 5 large felted wallhangings.  We have been fortunate to secure the services of Ruth Black as the textile artist leading the project.

The first wallhanging has been made by a group of the museum volunteers and subsequent panels are being made by other groups on the Black Isle during 2015.

These wallhangings should end up at approximately 3 feet wide by 6 feet high - which means they have to start out at 4ft x 8ft.  The felt shrinks as the felting progresses.  The participants are using a combination of different felting techniques to create the designs.

Ruth has been maintaining a fascinating blog for the project.

There are also lots of photographs of the feltmaking process in a web album.
