A Persona for the Northern Picts

John Hunter was appointed as Professor of Ancient History and Archaeology at the University of Birmingham in 1996. Prior to that he had worked for over twenty years at Bradford University. He has wide research interests, in heritage management, in forensic archaeology and in late Iron Age and Viking settlement, particularly in the relationship between natives and incomers.

He has been actively involved in Scottish archaeology since the mid-1970s, notably with excavations on teh Brough of Birsay, Orkney and Pool, Sanday, Orkney, and with survey work on Fair Isle, in Scapa Flow and in the Western Isles.

This pdf is the text of the Groam House Museum Annual Academic Lecture, which he delivered in 1996, in which he compared the settlement evidence from three Orkney sites at Howe, Skaill and Pool in Orkney. The lecture considered the routines of daily life from structural remains, from artefacts, and from the exploitation of the local environment. It identified a number of significant changes which appeared to have taken place in the 7th and 8th centuries.
