MARKETING, PUBLICITY, PROMOTION & CAMPAIGNING
20 years experience of the Voluntary Sector and of promotion, campaigning and raising awareness about medical conditions that are often sensitive, marginalised, stigmatised or ignored, like HIV/AIDS, TB & Hepatitis has often been, including training and raising awareness about various health and social issues in association with local health services.
I have had particular responsibility for the marketing, publicity & promotion (including recently in the vinvolved team), especially regarding training courses, involving liaising with the media; press releases; having responsibility for a £7,500 advertising budget (as part of around £12,000 in my specific remit)
Over many years, have been involved in a substantial number of interviews, features and appearances on local radio and articles in local newspapers. especially BBC Radio Leicester, including short and lengthy interviews, including about HIV/AIDS; health issues; volunteering recruitment; participation in discussion shows; my acting at the ‘Little Theatre’; and a sort of one-hour ‘Desert-Island Discs’ show and ‘Newspaper Reviews’ with John Florence of BBC Radio Leicester.
With the vinvolved team, I’ve had particular involvement for marketing materials; involvement in press/media work; and the development and management of a project website.
A number of years ago, I completed a 'Marketing' course at ‘London Central YMCA’, over 3 days with a detailed assessment. To support the work of Harborough District Council’s ‘Sports Development Officer’ through my involvement as Team Manager of a team for the ‘Youth Games’ over two years, I personally carried out additional publicity work which successfully increased attendance and participation.
One example of successful campaigning, utilising the media, and developing alliances, was when LASS was facing a £10,000 cut in funding and we had to work together to identify how we were going to manage this, respond to it, share out duties, and keep each other informed. I particularly developed key statements, messages, etc; utilising media; making contact with key Councillors; lobbying; soliciting support from our supporters and key stakeholders, etc. The budget cut did not happen.
I was pro-active in developing responses to the issue of ‘Criminal Prosecution of HIV Transmission’ and our response to this locally, particularly developing policy, joint messages, writing briefings & articles, etc, so we were all clear about how the organisation and individuals in it would relate to this in a consistent manner.
I am confident, outgoing, experienced in drama/theatre and presenting to people, and able to promote the project to others; and have experience in working with the media; gaining publicity & promotion; developing press releases; giving interviews; providing presentations; developing and using websites and other ‘new’ media; and campaigning.
